The Day Motorola Ditched Symbian

leave a comment »

The communications company has confirmed it is dropping the Symbian-based UIQ platform in favour of a focus on just three platforms: Android, Windows Mobile and the homegrown P2K platform that Motorola puts into very low-end handsets.

Two years later, they are making money with Android and waiting for Windows Phone 7.

They didn’t abandon it.

“We were among the first to realize that a closed operating system may not be the best solution,” said Maitre, who added that Orange had also been in conversation with Google about Android. “But we need the Linux community to not be so fragmented.”
